Recently the ESP BAS light has illuminated on my wife's 2001 ML320 (165,000 miles). I replaced the brake switch and the light went off for an hour and then came back on. It sometimes goes off and then comes back on, usually around the time the engine misfires it would seem. The ESP light first came on shortly after I had replaced the auxiliary water pump due to a leak with the old one. I have tried moving the steering wheel from left to right, with no luck.

OBD reader shows P0443 - Evap Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit, and no other error codes.

Your code reader is just that, it will only read "P" code which are engine related.

You will have to find someone who has a scanner that can read "C" codes which are Traction Control related.

Do you have any recommendations for reasonably priced multi function scanners that go beyond engine codes?

Also, do you have any idea what kind of issue I could be facing with this code?

This is the dealer I bought my Autel MD802 from, a few dollars($52) cheaper. It may be a bit different from above, but will do almost everything a weekend mechanic needed to do.
