Hello, I need a referral to a company/group I can send the shifter to so that the ESM board can be resoldered. The shifter won't go back into neutral and park from Drive. Have to use the parking brake, not the main pedal. Also, keyless go won't cooperate as it says must be in park in red, when it is in park.

2007 SL550

Thanks in advance.

Are you certain this is a malfunction of the electrical part of the shift mechanism? I don’t think that there are any electrical inhibitors that stop the unit going from drive to neutral. I am familiar with the 2003 to 2005 cars, so the 2007 may be different, but I don’t think so.

Dry joints in the shifter will throw a code, probably P1856.

This code is a pretty sure sign that the optical sensors in the shifter need to be resoldered. If you can get the shifter out then any electronics technician should be able to resolder it. You need a temperature controlled soldering station with a long thin tip.

Thanks, Tom, I realize that. You are restating the problem as I understand it. With due respect I'm not asking what's wrong with it, I'm looking for someone with such soldering experience/company with this expertise to send it for repair. Looks like I have found another DIY'r on another board who has kindly offered to do it at a reasonable price.
Thank you for your diagnostic expertise though.
Best,
J
