First, as a fairly new owner of an ML430 this place is fantastic. I have learned a ton!

But, yesterday I ran into my first real problem. I have a 1999 ML430 with 58,000 miles. After getting gas yesterday at a gas station I do not normally use the CEL came on within 5 minutes of driving away. The car is running fine but I noticed a sound that is like a nut loose in a hub cap or thin metal tapping against a hollow pipe. But everything seems to be running fine.

Went to Autozone (just like the posts suggest)and have a code 170, 173, and 455. I looked up the prior post and I think I understand the 170 and 173 but what is a "P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)"? Cat?

I think my plan is to run another tank of gas (incase it's bad gas) through and clean the MAF as suggested in prior posts. But what is the 0455 and if it's the cat is it covered by warranty? I live in Ohio near Cincinnati.

This is a great group of people, thanks again for the education!

You should check your petrol cap is on tight ( 3+ clicks), if this is loose it causes an engine error and light.

This may not be the answer but it is, at least, a very simple check.
When I have not tightend my gas cap past three clicks the little light at the bottom of the fuel meter flashes. The other time that little light flashes is when I fill it so full gas sits in the fill spout. I have never had my CE light come on. Is this just something on my 98? just curious

Frankly, I have not tried it myself, however, I have read (probably on this forum) that the check engine light may come on just for a loose fuel cap.

I only mentioned it because it is a very simple thing to check.

I will loosen my fuel cap, when I remember, and see which light comes on.
