The car is a 1982 W123 280E (euro version) with 49,400 kms. on it.
Recently the movement and the reading of the tachometer becomes erratic and inaccurate for a few seconds, after which it goes back to normal again for a few minutes, then it becomes erratic and inaccurate again.
I've checked all the connections on the instrument panel and it all seems to be in good condition.
Any ideas on what the problem is?
I'd really appreciate any advice/suggestions.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Check the amplifier

Sounds like you may have a bad tach amplifier under the hood on the drivers left fender. Easily replaced.

Isn't the top of the amplifier screw on? Try to tighten it up.
