The engine is shaking, may be misfiring.

Hi Forrera, How would I diagnose this? Would the tapping be related to the engine shaking, or is that a separate issue?

No messages on display, no OBC error codes. Invoice from previous owner shows 4 new spark plugs on 6 Jan 2020, 123603 km. Now 4 March 2020 124,805 km, so the plugs were installed two months and 1,000 km ago. The tapping noise was something I noticed soon after buying the car.

Invoice says "carry out "Minor" Service. Changed oil, trans-flushed CVT, flush brake fluid, replace spark plugs, ignition coils removed and inspected." It seems the prior owner took the car in every January for its Warrant of Fitness (MOT in UK) and general maintenance. I spoke with the shop today, and they seem knowledgeable (I asked them what CVT oil they used because it was a bit low on the dipstick).

B-class is a new experience for me, so I am learning what is normal and what is not. Appreciate if you can expand on your observation.

it seems like a purge valve ticking sound not a tappet. start the engine and listen. It should start after 1-2 mins. I have this vibration also because of worn engine and transmission mounts. if you rev a little it should dissapear.

Did you solve the problem? I have the same engine tapping.
Apparently it is not important. I ignored it. I've gone through several W245 cars, and they all seem to do it. However, as in the above reply, mine was not a tapping, but the purge valve. Check it against the video I made
.

Make sure it is not a timing chain - jump to 54sec if you don't want to listen to the narrative (not my video)

Mine also has a fair bit of tapping and it's made that noise almost forever as far as I can remember. Let's see what other members have to add.

I'm the OP in this thread and from the answers concluded I could ignore the tapping sound as just another bit of background noise. It seems to be one of the MB quirks that is not worth worrying about unless one suffers from misophonia. I've now gone through three W245 cars and all had it.

Just purchased a 2010 B180 which has been fully log book serviced 90,000km and yes it has the intermittent 'ticking' noise that seems to come and go. By the looks of the vehicle and its condition it looks to have been well cared for by an elderly owner. Everything else is fine except for this noise.

Yes, remove the air filter box and you'll see how simple it is.
But before you do that, the purge valve works harder when the car is cold or when you do short miles.
This sound will become less if you use the car more.
