This follows on the single chain discovery. From searching, I have gathered that the 500sel motor will be a straight swap to the 380sel.
Just for further clarification does this stand true for all variants of the 500 being interchangeable with all variants of the 380?. A 380se to 380sel?
A 500se to a 380sel?.

I had a 1982 500SL engine put into my 1981 380SLC. It took 2 Mercedes technicians one weekend to do it in my garage. What a difference in power.

Partially correct, a gen 1 500 motor will drop into a gen 1 380, a gen 2 500 motor (which over here will be an import also) will not drop in so easily as the fuel delivery systems are different, as I believe (K jet - KE jet).

But as far as the wheelbase goes, there is no difference in the same badged engine between the SE/SEL/SEC within the same generation.

I am in the middle of doing GEN I to GEN I 380-500 swap and it's pretty straight forward.

Thanks Gents, this now becomes option number 3 to resolve the single chain issue. Is Gen 1 until 84 or 85?.

I believe that Gen I is through 1985 model date. 1986 is beginning of Gen II
I want to see you stuff a 560 into that 380SEL. (I'd love to stuff one in my 380SE)
Take lots of pictures so we can use it as a DIY thread.
