Hi,
I'm in the process of swapping an engine from a 1985 300d to a 1983.
So far, on both cars I'm having difficulty separating the drive shaft from the tranny at the flexible rubber disc. The manual says to pry them apart with a screwdriver but I've had no luck with that method. Any suggestions? Will it be easier to pry apart once I've got the engine on the lift and start pulling it out?

How do I properly line up the drive shaft with the new transmission (once it's in)?

You have to loosen the driveshaft lock nut. See here...

For question #2, just rotate the driveshaft or transmission flange till the ears line up. They are not phased. BTW, the driveshaft is phased, so don't pull the two halves apart without marking them first.
