Found this on EBay. Killer price for a good diesel engine. NO CLUE if it would fit in someones Mog.

[:0] Wow! That is an engine and a half! I don't think a typical older Unimog transmission could begin to hold all that torque. A Cat 3208 is 10.4 liters. Not quite double the displacement of a Mog (5.7L). It is a V8, which means it may be shorter in length and height, at the cost of being wider than a Mog motor. Shorter is good, but, I am not sure if the width would work? Depends on which Mog you have I suppose. A 406 or 416 might be a tight squeeze. A square Mog might work better. Anyway, then you'd need a new transmission, drive lines, transfer case and bigger axles. Well, the list goes on. Good luck though. I have been wondering lately about putting a 5.9 Cummins or perhaps a 6.0 Ford or 6.6L Chevrolet in a 416. Anyone have a clue if any would physically fit? Same as above holds true for the drivetrain.... Later. Gene

i´m interested in finding out which diesel engines
are the "easiest fit" in an 404 ...

with easy i mean an engine that fits the gearbox and the clutch ...

the most likely candidate seems to be the diesel enginge
from MB 300 D built in the late 70´s, and to the
middle of the 80´s ... body W115 or W123, engine M617 ..

those cars are very common around here, and i can buy a whole donator car for about $700 ....

does anybody know anything about that? [:)]

I think the price is best in Germany. The price in Iceland is about 1200 euros +24.5%vat.

Check this site for detailed swap info and pics. This is definitely the swap for 404 mogs, lots of people have already done it so the bugs are worked out, and the 617 motor runs forevvvvveeerrr. I didn't want another swap project so I bought a 416, but I've already gotten plenty greasy starting on a clutch job. Lots of great mog tech here, htis guy seems all around interesting...

thanks for the link! ...

the reason for me buying a 404 is because the swedish rules regarding driver license ... there are two typs of trucks in sweden, light and heavy trucks. light trucks (or regular cars) are not allowed to weigh over 3.5 tons, but you can drive them with the same drivers license as regular cars. if the truck weighs over 3.5 ton you have to take another license, which i dont have ... [:(]

i have been told that a ford 5.4 that they use in the E-350 will fit in a 404 with few mods. i was not told the mods but the motor is very slim for an 8cyl.

the torque tubes are fitted in the gearbox/tranfercase ... (at least on the 404 ..)

its probably possible, but from my pov. its seems like alot of work ...

Why not changing enine _and_ transmissionbox? Or is the transfercase integrated in the gearbox on the Mog?

there is no trans that would be a step up from the stock one, even the six speed has more to offer than some more modern popular 4wd trans. I'm surprised that people haven't tried to use the mog trans in swaps for their other projects... even with 14r20 tires my mog can crawl slower than lots of rigs with low gearsets and other junk.
