I started the topic in "general issues"but thought it might be better over here.
I have this car for more than 10 years. One day it stops in traffic several times, and have the fuel pump replaced. Few years later: same thing, fuel pump replaced and all ok. While ago, after driving a 100 miles or so, it decelerates and only barely manages to keep it running at low speed. Park the car for a while. Drive to garage to have it checked: problem "healed", but have fuel pump replaced as precautionary measure. Runs ok again, except no fast acceleration-kind of hickups- when kickdown. Garage cleans some things, and now acceleration is ok, except engine stalls at idle. Cannot find problem, engine shuts off every time and starts difficult. He talks about high pressure fuel distributor and 3000usd.....Anyone with help?
Regards, Latetonite.

Thanks a lot, will tell the mechanic. I was thinking of a fuel filter somewhere, but he does not know where it sits..
Behind the right rear wheel, above the much-replaced fuel pump.

Will have him check this immediatly. Tx. BTW, you fly this shiny hot rod? I am a skipper on the ol`A300B4..regards.
I'll be flying that hot rod come May, though it won't be that shiny one, it will be painted. I used that pic in order not to "endorse" any particular airline. Who do you manhandle the Scare, err, Airbus for? I don't suppose this is your airplane, is it?

No, not so modern as this (-600). I am talking about the B4.On contracts worldwide, however am going now to the European Loco`s on the B738.
But I am pulling my hair out when I see mechanics fiddling with my car and my wallet when they do not know what they are doing..same as in planes!

Mechanic is reluctant to believe anything with filters. He suspects now an air leak. ?? Is this possible?
It's possible, depending on where he thinks said leak is.

I think he is looking at this fuel distributor,do not know the name, towards the injectors somewhere. He "cleaned" it and this got rid of the "hicups" when accelerating. Might have broken a gasket or something.Do not know why he does not get this filter theory. The fuel qty indicator is also working intermittently, so dirt in the fuel tank could IMHO be a plausible cause.[?]

Is there any evidence of mixture problems like blue or black smoke? Have you changed to a fuel with different octane? When you changed the fuel pump did you take a fuel sample to check for contaminants? I had some similar problems to you and it turned out to be due to a rusty fuel tank and bad fuel. The rust stuffed the fuel pump, fuel distributer and original iron injectors. A new fuel tank and new fuel, pump, filter and distributer and brass injectors fixed the problem.

Why not T off a line to a fuel pressure guage in front of the injector supply for a while.....nothing permanent and non-removable. Then monitor fuel pressure for a more complete picture/diagnosis of fuel pump/air leak/clogged filter situation. If the pressure doesn't go down when you are having troubles, then it ain't any of the above. If the pressure goes up and you are having trouble, you might look to see if you have a clogged return line to the tank if you have that in the injector system. Sorry, I don't know the fuel diagram for the car, but most fuel injection systems run fuel from the tank, thru pumps and filters thru the injectiors. Then any excess fuel goes back to the tank thru the return line. If the return line clogs, then you will be rich on the fuel mixture....causing the car to try to compensate in various ways. Excess heat, knock, is "sensed" and tried to stop, even to the point of self-preservation on some cars by shutting down.

All right, mecanic managed to get it running, and me stupid took it for a 2000 mile trip. Now I am in Italy and in a garage: They changed spark plugs( 1 month old)as they were black. Now they change the distributor as they cannot get the damn thing computer adjusted.See what happens. Nice to get an answer from Texas, that is where I learned to fly 22 years ago!But I am about to give up and sell my baby to the highest bidder. Stuck in In Italy where nobody speaks my language.Anybody wants a mint 300sl, with a weard engine?

Black plugs. At last a reply that gives us an insight into your engines running condition. It sounds like the mixture is the problem. Try looking at the cold start sensor. The problem can be intermitant but at least they aren't expensive.
