I have a 2000 SL 500 with 125k miles. I have had zero problems with this car, relatively speaking. Anyway, I was driving home from work today, near the end of a 25mile one way commute, when all of a sudden the Engine oil level indicator in the odometer display field came up with the "HI" indicator. I was driving about 45mph at the time, and had like I said driven almost 25 miles, mostly in stop and go traffic with a max speed due to accidents that diverted me off the freeway. I end up taking this route maybe once every 2 weeks, and had to use the same route 2 days ago.

So, I had an oil change approximately 2,500 miles and 3 weeks ago. I regularly check my oil, have not added any, or any additives. My question is what could possibly cause an increase in oil volume sufficient to trigger the "HI" warning indicator??? I changed the air filters 3 weeks ago as well, so I'm doubting that I have had the volume incease due to contaminants coming in that way. I did have the oil changed commercially as I was having an inspection performed. I am pretty sure that they didn't siphon the old oil, and instead used the drain plug. Once again, I've driven 3 weeks and 2,500 miles and all of a sudden this shows up.

I live in Phoenix Arizona, the temp was approx 100 degrees fahrenheit, pretty cool compared to the past 3 weeks. We do get a lot of bad dust storms, and have had a couple in the past 2 weeks that I was unable to perform.

The dipstick does show that the oil is HI, and I have siphoned about 1.5 cups of excess oil, and now when I perform the Engine oil level odometer display test it indicates "O.K.".

I hope I've described in sufficient detail my situation. Has anyone else ever experienced this scenario??? And does anyone have any opinions as to what's going on. Thank you in advance for any help.

I think you answered your own question by removing a small amount of oil,it sound as if it was slightly over full, its better to have it slightly under so as not to blow the seals I think :)
