Taking a poll here: Do you prefer 0W30 or 5W30 for your OM642? I live in a temperate area of the USA with temperatures ranging from 0F to 100F. My car has 180,000 miles on it and I am using 5W30. It definitely can be a little hard to start on very cold days, but I like the added viscosity given the age of the engine for our hot summer days. Probably not much difference between the two though. Some are recommending 0W30. Thoughts?

Also, I'd also like to hear thoughts on changing the transmission fluid. Recommendations seem to be all over the map. My mechanic said change it once at 50,000 miles then forget about it. Other people talk about changing it every 40,000 miles. Pretty big difference of opinion there!

Hello. Your OM642 will work with 0w30/5w30/5w40. Most importantly is if your oil meets the specs which are 229.50/51/52. .52 is the latest formulation for the cars. Now, since yours is a 2008, it does not have the aftertreatments for your emissions. To which you can run a any full saps oil that meets the 229.50 spec and you'll be fine. Your transmission will either take the red fluid or blue fluid, but I'm guessing it's the red one. Go with MB original fluid or Amsoil transmission fluid, both are very good and will last. Generally transmission fluid will last anywhere between 75k and 100k miles. However, depending on driving style and conditions, that interval should be shortened to 50k to 75k miles. Change your transmission fluid every 50k miles and you'll be fine. I think the spec is 236.14/15 for the fluid. You will have to check with your dealer or if you're using an online store, call them to verify with your vin.

fcpeuro.com is highly recommended as they have lifetime warranty on everything, even fluids. GL.
