Anybody know where I can find the engine number? I would have done a search in the forum but can't get search to work. Get an error message.

Thanks, Bill

Here ya go. This is the general location for the engine # for all MB engines, although there may be minor variances here and there.

I tend to go by the one where the timing cover meets. That seems to be the universal spot for all MB engines.

On the M104 specifically, look on the block by the alternator bracket. A engine# is also stamped there.

Found it!! Now all I have to do is figure out how to get some Ospho in there to make it readable. I should have rotated the pic around, but it's in the rusty part of the pic.

Many thanks, Bill

Now to decode it

I see the numbers as 104 992 12 075 267 810 0. I know the 104.992 is the engine model number. Don't know what the 12 is? And I presume the 075267810 is the actual serial number?

Any thoughts?

on the datacards, the engine numbers are given as 104992 12 022705 (my 1993) or whatever, they are all XX XXXXXX

so the extra digits on the end must reference something else.

anyone who has a Xentry Parts subscription can look up your VIN and find your original engine and transmission serial, its also on the 'data card' that was included with every Mercedes in the owners folder.. now, if your car has had stuff swapped, all bets are off.

IMHO, any car that has had an engine swap or any sort of customization should have a binder with laminated pages detailing all the changes.
