Hello lads,
I was under the car and saw that the back of the auxiliary air pump had disintegrated from its posterior, another words it had lost its arse on my 91 560sec. Well I pulled the hoses in a downward direction and everything just fell off. Now I have exhaust fumes emanating from my engine compartment into my cabin.

Would any of you know how to plug the leak and what's involved in doing so as I'm sick and fucking tired of inhaling exhaust fumes even when my windows are closed.

Thanking you all for your responses,
Dave S.

I removed my air pump, and its mounting bracket for the 91 sec. The pump runs for 18 seconds on cold start. Your recirculating flap should be closed, your exhaust manifolds may be leaking.

I too removed the pump (it didn't have a belt on it when I bought it), bracket, plumbing, and wiring over to the fender. Be sure to put the bolts from the front of the bracket back into the engine (washers or slightly shorter bolts would work) to prevent oil seepage, there is a "C" in the rear of the bracket, that bolt can stay just snug it down.

You guys misunderstand. I don't want to remove my sir pump, I want to leave it in place but need an idea or method on how to plug the exhaust manifold so I don't smell the escaping exhaust fumes from where the air inlet from the pump to the manifold is.

Thanks wooky and 28. Please help!

Is pretty simple, I see immediately three easy solutions for you:

1) Disconnect the rubber hose going from the engine to the pneumatic valve (the "flapper"). You will see the fitting (first picture, hose was removed, right in front of the oil filter housing). You need to obstruct that fitting (air tight).
- or -
2) Remove the fitting and instead install a plug (can't remember the size, but Mercedes used that size again, I think even on the timing chain cover). Second picture shows the hole exposed.
- or -
3) Leave the above as they are, but instead disconnect the hoses that are connected (the hose going to the pump is actually two hoses connected with a coupling). Extract the plastic coupling and instead install a plastic plug (as the one used at the ends of the air distribution hose), to my best recollection they are the same size. I used some Google pictures for exemplification.

Good luck.

I found the fitting shown in liveu's photo, it still had the hose on it. I installed a metal shutoff valve I had laying around in my toolbox for the last thirteen years. No more exhaust fumes in the cabin. The pics really helped.

Thanks
Dave.
