Hello everyone, i'm new here.
Just a quick question,
I recently picked up a B class for my wife and everything was OK for a while.
We went for a 2000km trip and now i'm getting a engine noise at idle.
Sounds just like a timing chain noise. Quite loud. I took it to the dealer for them to have a listen. They said it's normal.
Do any of your vehicles make a similar noise??
Cheers!!

The noise seems to fade away as the engine speeds up.
Just noticable at idle.
Not really a ticking noise but more of a rubbing noise. Like a worn out timing chain slack adjuster.
Dealer said everything is normal, but, to be honest i don't believe them.
I think i'm going to go to a different dealer and take one out for a rip to see if there's a similar noise in that one.
I've only got 2800kms on mine.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers!

b 200 engine ticking sound

I have a 2006 B200 with only 9 000 kilometres. I've noticed a ticking sound at idle, like noisy valve lifters. It seems to come and go. The dealer first determined that a head decarbonisation was in order, but the sound persists. Now an audio file of the sound has been send to Germany for instructions on how to proceed.....anyone else out there have a similar experience ?

I think I have heard that kind of noise too. Is the car moving at low or high speed? Mine happens during low speed. It is like a clock ticking sound.
My B200 also at times sounds like a slow clock ticking. I have no idea what it is at this time, and I'm not worrying about it. I've checked for bombs  and all is clear.

A head decarbonisation at 9,000 km they must be joking what were they going to do charge you for it as 'fair wear and tear'
Please keep us informed on the progress of this one

I think it could be the idle purge valve (fuel vapopur recovery system) clicking open + closed.

Early W203 cars had a service bulletin about just this sort of a noise. The fix was to put a soft rubber gasket under the valve.

Well may'be purring.

How long have you had to wait, I was told for a UK one it would have been 12 weeks but I bottled out on that and revised my spec and they were able to get a shorter time by getting one that was pre ordered & just being built. (it also saved me £750 being the amount the would deduct for the depreciation for the 12 weeks on my old one)

Don't forget we want to see your Avatar when your B is factory fresh.

It was ordered August 18th and should be delivered by Oct 31....my dealer already had it in the system as a stock order, so it was a little quicker than average.

Wouldn't mind betting that our (UK) servicing is dearer than yours DEVOURS, but why not say that you are MikeT and swap yours for his new one. (sorry Mike after you've waited so long)
That would be a great idea but remember there are 3000+ miles between Mike and myself and when he gets it, we are 'so going to be treated' by his great feedback on this new 'toy'! Cheers

My understanding from the Dealer in the Toronto area is that the sound is normal and comes from a purge valve for the emission system. Apparently it opens and closes on a regular basis, based on computer input when the valve needs to open and close. It is supposedly part of the fuel recovery system and is normal.

I covered the valve on my B200 with high temperature foam and it quieted down quite a bit. Still hear it but not as much. It seems to be more of an annoyance rather than a problem. I think they could have addressed the issue better acoustically by providing a plastic cover over the motor with high temperature foam backing materials. A lot of car manufacturers are doing that, from BMW, Porche, and low end cars like Chrysler all do it to dampen the noises that come from using aluminum engine parts.

I've noticed that sound since my car was new. It seemed like a bad lifter at first but it's been making the sound for 8 years and 204,000 km. No worries.

No, the purge valve is something else. It pumps fuel vapours into the intake tract under certain low load conditions.

The BMW X1 ticks because it has direct injection. The B 200 is indirect injection and the injectors are very quiet.
