Could just be running the fuel lean -- mine knocks a bit when going up steep hills because I adjusted mine to run lean. Take it to a mercedes shop and ask them..they'll be able to tell you for sure if that's the cause. The other possibility is that it's low on oil, so check the dipstick.
Engine Knock...Need help!!!

We just purchased a 88 2.3 and it has a pretty good engine knock.. I guess the guy that owned it ran it out of oil....The exhaust is clear..good compression...I pulled the head..valves look ok and head gasket was OK..
Any Ideas what to look for? I guess rod bearings or mains?
Any help would be great...

Hmmm...just remembered...my dad's 85 2.3 knocks a LOT. In fact, it sounds like a deisel, even though it's gas. I could be wrong, but I believe that's just the style of engine.
