I'm trying to learn the difference between the different diesel engines. Are the 5 and 6 cylinder engines similar except for number of cylinders. Is either engine more difficult/expensive to rebuild? Looking at a 1980 300 SD. My first "hobby-Benz" :)

Yes, sticlk w/ the 5 cylinder 617's. The 603 and it's varients are more problamatic and IMHO more difficult to work on.

If you haven't already adjust your valves on your SD..it's commonly overlooked and it they have not been done in a long time can net you a noticeable amount of HP.
