For the last couple of weeks the engine idle speed has been every so slightly erratic at times ( the rev needle moves perhaps up or down a millimetre or so whereas previously it remains very steady on a spot just above 5 ).

My car is an early ’96 SL320.

Yesterday when I went to start the car instead of starting on the first instant I had to turn the engine quite a few times before it started.

The car is not due a service for another few months.

I don’t intend trying to remedy the problem myself but I would like to be a little informed when I take it to the garage in a few days to get it looked over.

I’m assuming that the problem is caused by either dirty or worn spark plugs or else the engine needs re-tuning ???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated along with an indication of how hard my wallet is likely to be hit !

Many thanks

had very similar prob. it would take 3-4 tries before

starting (i did not have the idle problem).
the dealer replaced the fuel pressure regulator & now it starts on the first try.
i would think replacing the reg would be ez.
i had the dealer do it 'cause it fell under warranty.
