Dear All,

Am owning E-240 Model 2004 , Recently i began hearing a humming sound from the engine area , the humming sound increased while driving specially when i push on the accelerator , but while the engine is on but the car is not moving "Gear on N or P" the sounds disappear.

What could cause such a humming ?

Ok, then I misunderstood you.
Lets try again, while the car is in Park and not moving, and when you race the engine, you hear a humm and it gets louder as the engine RPM gets higher....right? All while the car is standing still.

There could be several reasons,
If you added aftermarket audio equipment, sometimes there is interference that manifests itself thru the speakers and it goes up and down with the rpm
If you have a vacuum leak, it may sound like a humm or whistle
Worst case scenario is an internal engine problem

if the humming sound .. @ .. bearing sound ...
goes according to Engine Speed ...
It's Clear ... The 'H' was from the engine parts ...

if it goes according to the vehicle speed ...
probably it was from the wheel bearings ...
or
the rear axle / rear differential bearings ...

you mention ... the 'H' goes quiet ... at N/P position
the Car STOP ... Is the Engine Still Running ...??
if YES , probably it was from the wheel bearings ...
you may lift up the car ... try to turn the wheel ... freely
Put Your Hand / Hold The Shock Absorber ...
To feel-it ... any vibration at the S/Absorber ...??
If YES ... the wheel bearing had DAMAGED ... WORN OUT
* For the Rear Wheel ... It Was A Little Problem ...
Sometime the vibration may come from the Rear Axle / Rear Differential ...

because for this model ... E240/E280
the Rear Differential Bearings ... always ... KAPUTT ...

Sound like the differential bearings could not last Looooooooong ....

hope this helps ....

The sounds doesn't go on N or P position unless am not pushing the gas paddle

What I mean is that when the car position is on N or P position and am not pushing the gas am not hearing any sound
But as soon as I push the gas paddle I will begin hearing and it's aligned with the rpm.

Does this means that the sound is from the engine ?

Vacuum leak ? How can I know this ? What should I inspect to check such a leak if it exist ? Which part in the engine ?

Do You Meant ...
the 'H' sound ... come on from the Engine ...
(* N/P Vehicle STOP)
as long as ... Engine Speed Raised ... acceleration ...
it goes louder ...??

If YES, ... please ask your Mechanic To Check The FAN-BELT-BEARINGS ...
I understand the idler-plastic-pulley ...
on top the Alternator ... always goes 'KO' faster... (it was a plastic)
or
the FAN-BELT-TENSIONER pulley ... too much duty

** A small pulley ... worn-out faster ... because of the speed ... turning too fast

hope this helps ,
