I have searched the forums, talked to Phil at fast lane, even tried diesel giant and mercedes source, but can't get the same answer twice. I need to replace the fan clutch and water pump and FAN on my w123. The water pump is easy and inexpensive. The fan clutch and fan are a problem though. Mine has the metal fan. The dealer says that has been replaced by the plastic one and just to use the plastic fan. Does anyone know are these fans and fan clutches interchangeable? I have the early version on the motor, # 014710. My metal fan is cracked and the fan clutch is noisy. MUST be replaced, just not sure with what. Any advice appreciated! Thanks

It's a grey area, but here is what is supposed be the fans.

300D
Engine serial number through 036024 - Behr part number 0002000422
Engine serial number from 036025 - Behr part number 0002001922

Engine serial number through 003977 - Behr part number 0002000422
Engine serial number from 003978 - Behr part number 0002001922

Engine serial number through 000008 - Behr part number 0002000422
Engine serial numbers through 000008 - Behr part number 0002001922

Engine serial number through 039510 - Behr part number 0002000422
Engine serial number from 039511 - Behr part number 0002001922

Now my car's engine # is over 036025, but has a 6 blade steel blade fan and it's original. I've seen several car like that particularly with the TDs and CDs.

BTW - I have an extra clutch that came from a 6 blade steel fan and I have an extra 9 blade plastic fan and clutch combo that I can sell.

PM me if interested.

I would think either one would work. The epc doesn't specify plastic or metal, but does have two listed, yours, as you mention, is the early one.

so, if the only fan i can find new is the 9 blade plastic fan, pn 1102000323, (which is the later one, i think) would I need to use the later fan clutch pn 0002001922, or the earlier one, pn 00020004422
I work for a car dealership and we get worldpac so I can get very good prices IF I can determine the correct parts. and these are both in stock locally

If you lock up the fan, the fan would spin as fast as the motor, and you'd lose power because the engine has to pump that fan big-time. The clutch is there so you don't lose power when you're climbing the RPM band.
