Steam cleaning is fine as long as you dont flood the electric's and you are sensible about it. I use gunk or diesel and a pressure washer to keep mine clean. You have to be more carefull with petrol's than diesel's

remove bulk crap using gunk or the like

closer detail is great with diesel or paraffin and a power spray (pref from a compressor) electrics can be done likewise with a high volatile solvent (I use 2 pac thinner)

REMEMBER
if water is used - keep it away from any electrics
if solvent / fuel is used - give it plenty of time to evaporate in the open air - otherwise you create a potential bomb.
