Thanks. Did some research on the OM651 engine and it actually looks pretty complicated; unlike the OM642 valve where its bolted by two screws the OM651 requires you to take the whole thing off (i think?).

Was planning to clean it but I will probably screw it up along the way. Perhaps a carbon cleaning service would do (?)

 

I doubt it, its a exhaust gas recirculation valve, the carbon clean might make a small difference, but it is more beneficial to the fuel and combustion side of the engine, its pretty much spent by the time it hits the exhaust.

 

I see. My engine is getting a little bit of rough idling with a small rhythmic thumping sound (on and off though); thought it might be an egr-related issue. Too bad that I can't really clean it and see how dirty it is.
