Hello,

In Australia the following models were offered up to the end of 1985 (all used leaded petrol):

280SE
380SE
380SEL
380SEC (technically not a W126)

The above models were replaced from the start of the 1986 with the following models (all used unleaded petrol):

300SE
420SE
420SEL
560SEL
560SEC (technically not a W126)

I am curious to know what are the main differences between the early versus late models.

Is it correct the early models used the Bosch K-Jetronic system whereas from 1986 the S-class were all updated to the Bosch KE-Jetronic system? Is the KE system more fuel efficient?

There is a mint condition, low-mileage 1990 420SE which is for sale. I am keen to know how much it would differ to my father's 1984 380SE.

Thanks in advance to those who reply.

That should be the higher compression 420 motor, and its quite a lot more peppy than the 380. And a bit more economical too I think. You will like it a lot if you liked the 380.

My father's 380SE is bordeline adequate. Sluggish when accelerating from stationary but OK when on the move.

That silver/grey SE is from a one owner deceased estate is a rare find with those low kms (the car is immaculate). I would not hesitate in snapping it up if i were you.
Your will enjoy the 1990 (delivered 1991) 420 compared to your 84 SE as a number of refinements undertaken by then, including the torque difference as the 420 is definately a step up from a 380 in traffic duties

I have seen the advert (wrong state for me to see in person) but worth you going and having a test drive so you can know first hand what it drives like. One owner & full service history by MB Dealer from new speaks for itself.
