My climate control works well but note how the back lighting comes through around the symbols.

Is there anyway to fix this or do I need a "new" climate control panel?
Does anyone have a photo of one of these with the buttons removed? (Thinking there are masks behind each button)

Oh wow, I've never seen that before. The fact that every button is uniformly translucent like that (and not just the ones that get pressed most often), my first instinct is to say that perhaps there is some kind of mask behind the buttons that was removed, although I've never heard of such a thing myself.

Only other thing I can think of is perhaps this happened due to the climate the car was stored in reacting with the plastic in some way. But that seems very doubtful.

Long story short, I have no idea. Strange.

Thanks Tom. The buttons are in good condition. There's no stickiness or anything like that.

I'll take it apart at some point and see what's behind the button faces.

My 1992 300SEL had the same problem. I believe there is some kind of material that falls off due to age and climate. Mine was even visible without the lights being turned on.

My car was located in Syria and the temperature in the summer would reach 50c/120F.

Thanks Mike. So it looks like I need to yank it out and see what's what but most likely I'll be sourcing a good one in the near future.

I'll post pictures here once I have mine apart. It might an easy fix!
