OK all. Just got back 2 hours ago from a 1200km drive from Munich to London in my new car, E60 AMG. Needless to say, it was a fantastic drive. I didnt know that you could make an E500 go faster than it already is. Obviously, I am shattered, so there is one pic for now, with more to come, and the story of the journey and how I Struggled to beat a 96/98 VW Polo on the Autobahn, watch this space (if you are interested, that is)

Upo.

E500 is the later model for example from 1993-1995.
500E is the earlier model for example 1991-1993.

Same for 400E/E420 etc. So, there are some changes between the E500 and 500E. For example the grille and hood is updated or "facelifted" on the E500 and the trunk has also changed, the E500 has a chrome rear stripe, instead of the 500E black plastic one. Also the bumper and some plastic parts on the E500 are colour coded to the car's colour rather than standard black plastic on the 500E. There maybe a slight BHP difference between the 500E and E500 but this only applies to these cars (I think). I think the lower body cladding is polished on the E500's but im not 100% sure about this. Apart from that the E500 and 500E are basically the same and you will probably feel no difference when driving inside of one at 260km/h [:D]

Here are some pictures attached, which show the top being E500 and the below being 500E.

One correction abbam, the 500E front view, being a North American model, it would have the USA spec headlights as well, correct?

500E front view should also have amber indicators [;)].

Yes you are both correct. The 500E USA models have the USA headlights, which are older and the 500E's have the orange turning signals, thanks for the corrections and photos to correct attached. Picture attached : Original USA 500E (1992).

You are joking right? For those who really care to know. First the obvious, The 500's M119 is slightly bored and stroked to arrive at 5 liters. Chassis is the same, brakes are the same. 500 has self leveling rear hydraulic suspension. Obviously the body panels/fenders are unique to 500. Interior is identical. Both cars will pull 155 mph. but the 500 will get there a little quicker. Both cars feel about the same except the 400 feels softer and more plush. The 500's 50 plus ft.lbs. of torque makes it feel more responsive and more effortless. The 400 however is still a hard charger with a motor that is sure to impress most anyone. Super quiet but blazing fast..
