What are some good / common pre purchase inspection PPI things to look for before buying one of these? I have a bead on a 123k miles '01 E430 that has had regular brake, coolant and tranny flushes (well, 1 on the tranny at 99k). Carfax sounded good.

The very best PPI thing to look for is a qualified MB indie shop to do the work.. for $200 - $250 on average the best investment in professional talent that will pay you back ten fold.

There is a list of common issues in the stickies, that's a decent starting place. It looks like you're a longtime Benz owner, so you may be qualified to do the PPI, but only you know that. If not, pay someone who is. One of three results: you confirm the car is in good shape and you want it, you find deal killers so you can walk away, or you find some issues that give you valid points by which to argue for a price reduction.

Happy shopping.

Hopefully, you're not finding this car on ebay. Don't even think about going this route. Just try to file a claim with their so called Buyers Protection Plan, missing engine parts don't qualify, and you will spend at least 72 hours getting someone on the phone that transfers your call and you'll spend another 72 hours listening to crickets. This is especially true for anyone selling cars on ebay from Ohio, almost no penalty for internet fraud, deceit, or crime;kiss your money goodbye. Caveat Emptor!!

Beware if you're looking at the one in Vegas on craigs, the car actually has 140 and not 123k miles as represented.

Getting back to ebay cars, I ran a carfax on a 2001 E430 Sport package, which listed miles as 109,000. When I sent a letter to MB with the VIN, their service records said that it had 143,000 in 2007, the ad on ebay was posted in June of 2010. Probably had at least 195,000 at time of posting. You can get the services records if you have the VIN, and a copy of the title by writing MB a letter. All warranty work and parts are recorded on their VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry), they won't give you a copy of this document, but a print-out in another format which shows the work done/part replaced, date of service, and mileage at time of work. There is also a code for which dealership did the work, but if it was done indy, your out of luck. Please note what I said previously about Ohio, if you want the name of the scum and his father-in-law, that run this scam, send me a PM.

A good place to start is reading the common issues thread in the stickies. Heck also read the thread titles in the diy/help stickies and that should get you set.
