How does the e420 engine compare to the e430. I understand that the e430 is a twin spark per cylinder design. Any advantages? Does one coil fire both spark plugs? Are there other Mercedes twin spark/cylinder engines? TIA

Both are rated at the same HP, but IIRC the 430 has a flatter torque curve. There are proponents for both engines. 420 has variable intake timing, 430 uses twin runners on the intake path. 420 is a twin cam/bank, 430 is single cam/bank. If I was shopping around again, I'd look at car condition first, engine further down the list.

+1 all true
430 3 valve motor
420 4 valve motor
And I agree the engines are so close, the condition of the car itself would be of greater concern.

I've owned both the E420 and E430. I'd have to say the flatter torque curve of the E430 is quite noticeable. However, the E420 feels much more refined especially under hard acceleration. The 420 is almost electric.

I agree with both LouB, E420 and YachtMaster...The car matters much more than the engine. If I had to pick between a '97 E420 and a '98 E430 and everthing were equal....I'd go with the E430...based solely on parts availability.
