For the Saturday morning rant, what were they thinking when they designed MAF and decided to make the clamps pain in the rear to loosen.

Looking at some of the write-ups and pictures, only the top clamp needs to be loosened, twist and MAF should come out. Is there a trick to removing the MAF? Anything that needs to be aligned?

Thx

Thanks. That was the page I was looking at. After much swearing, i was able to pull it off.

ETA seems to have some carbon build up. What could be causing it? Can I use MAF cleaner to clean throttle body as well? They sell a throttle body cleaner but not sure if it just marketing or has something specific that is specific to TB.

The throttle body cleaner would be best to use - its formula makes the carbon very easy to clean off. But if your willing to scrub it some then maybe the MAF cleaner will work too.

The Carbon on the throttle flap is quite normal - it accumulates after thousands of miles use. The pics were when I cleaned the throttle body in my 500E (125k Miles approx) Make sure & use a new gasket on re-fitting the throttle body. (To clean it properly it should be removed)

That's does look not too bad from above. The carbon builds up from the underside though - might be worth flipping it open & taking a look with a torch. But it's not a 'must do' job in any case.

It's worth also noting the Manufacture date of the ETA when you have good access to it. If it's older than 1998 you may want to keep an eye out for a newer replacement because of the eco junk woes.

However - my personal findings are that the one expection to this rule is m119 ETA's with the large 'Pancake' style connector plug. I have never heard of one of those having an Eco Junk harness. (But the m119 ETA with later style plugs do)

Thanks folks.
ETA is march, 1995 and most likely had eco-junk issues. Right now, my priority is to get emissions testing passed so that I can put the car on the road. I cleaned MAF really well with MAF cleaner and see if it works. If not, looks like 4-5 large ones for a reman unit.

That's crazy money for a reman'd unit. You can find updated non eco junk units on eBay all day long for a fraction of that.
Are we talking about MAF or ETA? I was referring to MAF. I checked all available sources and $400 is the lowest for a reman unit before the core charge. ETA - I agree, ebay is the place and has decent prices.
For now, MAF is my priority.

And, I am finding out parts for E420 are >>> than parts for E320.
