Using a MityVac extractor, the most I can get out is 6 qts, yet my dealer consistently charges me for 8 quarts. Any comments, suggestions, advice?/ Thanks!
Is the engine at operating temperature when doing the extraction? It should be. You will achieve better extraction results as the oil is of lower viscosity.

That is why I like my Topsider - you stick the tube down until you feel the bottom of the pan - I can't speak specifically to your application, but every Mercedes I have had - I6 M103, M119 V8, M272 V6, have all had the 8 LITER capacity. Or about 8.5 qts.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. I have used both the Mityvac and the Topsider multiple times but again only able to extract about 6 qts!

Why people want to change oil using the suction method is beyond me. Unscrew the 13mm drain plug, catch the oil, insert the drain plug and washer, then fill.

Next we will read about some special ray from the Andromeda galaxy to do oil changes. Do not overcomplicate this basic service.

I've used the Topsider for over 20 years. The car was designed for oil extraction. Who wants to get under the car and get dirty? Because the oil pan is designed for this (most cars aren't) you get all of the oil, if you use it right (make sure the tube is hitting the pan).

There's really only 1 disadvantage - the time it takes (and mine takes even longer because over the years the heat of the oil has constricted the tube). And I have learned you don't want the oil at op temperature - but let the car sit a good 30-60 minutes. And you don't want to pull it out completely cold unless you want to take even longer. And as Peter said you have to be persistent with the pumping as it will lose vacuum.

I've NEVER and I repeat NEVER used the vacuum method to remove engine oil. I was a dealer for 20 years and we never found any advantage to it. Like nearly everyone is saying, you can't get the oil completely out and the oil drain plug does. I will disagree that the vehicle IS NOT designed for this purpose, the pan has a low area where the drain plug is located.

So, use whatever method you like. I'll stick to what works.

I'll stick to what works too thank you

I have listened to this debate over and over over many years.

it's like "what kind of oil should I use?" Dino or Synthetic?

People who have used the suction method correctly and then as an experiment undid the drain plug and nothing comes out but this applies only to Mercedes-Benz. I tried it on a Toyota and residual oil out the drain plug.

And, as I have said before, the suction method does not work for most cars, but Daimler has always (in recent memory) made sure the deepest point of their oil pans is always below the dipstick tube.

But as others have said, use whatever method floats your boat.

I seriously doubt that you can remove the oil drain plug and nothing comes out after using the extractor. However, any way you want to slice this up, using the extractor only transfers money from your pocket to someone else's for additional equipment. I keep mine in my pocket.
