Hi guys

Servicing a friends 2006 E280 CDI next week and the diesel filter needs replacing.
Done it many times on older W124 models but not this engine,
Does the fuel system self bleed by turning the engine over as on the W124's or does it have to be bled manually and if so is there a manual pump built in or do you have insert one for the job and removed after bleeding?

My assumption is the fuel filter is similar or even the same as the e320 cdi filter. If it is similar, all you have to do is remove the water separator in the center and the sensor and lastly the hoses, mount and it's a piece of cake. No special tools required but it does take some time.

On my 2008 CDI I follow this sequence:
The bleeding is done by placing key in pos 2 (before Start).
Fuel pump will run until system is pressurized.
Advance key to start.

I've read that sometimes you need to hold the key in Start position until smooth idle, but that hasn't been my experience.

Serviced the car today, changed oil & oil filter, cabin filter, both air filters and the diesel filter. Advice was priceless, I never would have thought the diesel filter would prime so easily.
Gotta love the forums.

I've read that sometimes you need to hold the key in Start position until smooth idle, but that hasn't been my experience.

If this is engaging the starter while engine is firing I would not attempt it.
