I'm about to pick up an 83 300SD from someone I know. It has 232K on it. He bought it from his neighbor 2 years ago at 210K. It doesn't have any rust but in usual gray anthracite fashion, the roof, hood & trunk can use a respray. Last summer, he was going to re-do the seats but ran across a gray back seat from a later model, complete with head rests in great shape so he installed it. When it came to the front, instead of recovering them, he found black front seats in great shape and installed those. My plan is to try re-dyeing the rear seat, package shelf and maybe the door fabric inserts black. Anyone do this with success ? Any recommended products or should I try an unholstery shop ? Will they redye or just paint the seat ?

No one ? Should I just look to swap the black front seats for gray ones ?

I did the re-dye thing on another vehicle (not MB) with moderate success. It was from a spray can (not paint, but dye). I probably should have cleaned and prep'ed my surfaces better, because on higher wear zones (door arm rests, top of door panel, kick panel) the "dye" is pealing off. ow in the areas that do not normally get touched (top of dash, front dash panels, pillars where seat belts retract to) look great!! Like it was done that way from the factory! The better way to do it should be to find the door panels in the color you want and you can get a replacement seat cover in the color you want. But if no one will sit in the back go right on ahead.

Solved my dilema. I'm getting this one..

84 300SD with 184K. Needs a/c repair, right front window & drivers seat controls. It's $1000 less than the gray one but in much nicer shape. I'll spend maybe that difference fixing it. All the interior needs is the wood which is worse than the gray one but the dash is better than the gray one. 17" AMGs with Proxes - less than 1000 miles on the package. Original wheels in the trunk - perfect for snows. Just need to find Euro headlights to complete the look.

Sounds like a decent deal, but be prepared for a lot of grunt work refreshing the wood! Also, maybe the photo just doesn't show them well enough to make a judgment, but those wheels don't look like AMG products to me. Do they have the AMG stamp on them, and do you know which wheels they are?

They look like stock wheel from a '99 or so SL500 to me.

That's what I meant...

I'll probably do the wood refinishing myself. I'm quite good at it.
