You press the catch on the head restraint guide, which allows you to lower it. To raise, pull it up.

You can find a diagram in your owner’s manual. If you lost it, download one.

I don't see a button anywhere...
On the top of your back support, where the 2 headrest chrome rods slide into the plastic guide; on the edge of this plastic piece, there is a side compression-style button. Look hard.

To be specific if facing the back of the vehicle the push tab is on your right.

I find it easier to kneel in the seat facing backwards push the tap with my right hand lift up or push down with the left.

It should lift up without pushing any buttons. You only need to push the button catch to lower it.

True
But I just yesterday reinstalled the 3 rear becauce we had the seats folded and all the way down. I found it easier using the button for both up and down.

Are you talking about this? After playing around with it, trying to flip it open or get it to move, I still can't seem to adjust or remove the headrests...

Your button looks to be stuck in the "in" position. which means the headrest should be free to move. Try pushing up and down rapidly on the rest to see if it pops out. Otherwise it may be broken. What about the other rests?

Button shown is fine. You need to squeeze that button and lift up the chrome rod on that location. It will lift up (or go down to adjust the height.
Also, the headrest itself swivels where it enters the underside of the headrest.

Often the case, the button shown loses it position/tension, whatever... (as with ours) and will visually show in the closed (unlocked) position. Just squeeze a tad harder and do as in post #9. It will come out. :)

The posters button appears to be in so the head rest should move. If I am reading him right seems he can’t get it to move up or down regardless of what he does to it.

That’s why I was wondering about the other 4 rests.

Lack of muscles, these chrome rods are a tight friction fit.

The metal clip inside the catch mechanism is out of place, causing the jammed head restraint.

Flip off the square cover by prying upward and outward at the front or rear edge (with a flathead screwdriver). Using a small screwdriver, you should be able to lever the clip and unjam it.

Mine were jammed up tight, wouldn't budge.. Pushed, pulled, it didn't matter.. They wouldn't move.. I laid a small bead of WD-40 around the rod where it meets the plastic.. Waited a few minutes to let the WD run down the rods.. And they broke free with very little effort..
PS.. You don't have to drown them in WD, just a few drops to run down the rods..

I've had exactly the same problem on my ML430.
