I seem to remember a Car and Driver project in the '80's where a diesel engine was transplanted into a Jag XJS. Someone could have done the same with an SL.

In 1975, Mercedes did build a diesel sedan with a 5 cyl engine. It was the 240D 3.0. The 5 cyl engine was used for years. Our '85 has the turbo version of that same OM617 engine.

But if this is the one, then it must be a conversion, or maybe the dealer is just mixed up!

300D came out in 1976 (W123 chassis).

Prior to that, the OMC617 5cyl diesel was installed in the W115 chassis and was called a 240D 3.0. Not many made 1974-1976.

I know. I was referring to the two different shades of green. Looks like the front has been repainted. The colors don't match.

That's not the engine in question in the vids. That's an OM603 6 cylinder used on the later ( 1986-1992 300Ds 300D 2.5s and 300SDLs)
