I seem to remember a Car and Driver project in the '80's where a diesel engine was transplanted into a Jag XJS. Someone could have done the same with an SL.

These were all originally gasoline, right? There's one on my local craigslist advertise as a 74 SCL Diesel 5 cyl.

Am i misinformed? Idiot seller? Frankenstein's car?
In 1975, Mercedes did build a diesel sedan with a 5 cyl engine. It was the 240D 3.0. The 5 cyl engine was used for years. Our '85 has the turbo version of that same OM617 engine.

But if this is the one, then it must be a conversion, or maybe the dealer is just mixed up!

That's not the engine in question in the vids. That's an OM603 6 cylinder used on the later ( 1986-1992 300Ds 300D 2.5s and 300SDLs)
