This is a temporary sticky in case there is any confusion over the notice at the top of the forum.

***Attention Users***
Dropbox has decided to discontinue their "Public Folder" feature. This means that all images embedded onto the site using it will no longer display, becoming broken links. Starting May 1st, we will be lifting the time limit on editing posts for one week.
Please use this time to fix any images that use the Dropbox Public Folder feature.

This is a notice that applies only to any of you who have used the picture hosting site, "Dropbox" to hotlink photos into your threads. Personally, I have relied on Photobucket so it does not apply to me and any others who use that site or others as well. If you didn't use Dropbox, then your thread pictures will be okay.

If you use the BenzWorld "Manage Attachments" feature to upload your pictures into your thread, you should be okay, even if you used Dropbox. Only the pictures that you hotlinked using the Image
icon should be affected.

What the notice is informing you of is that for one week, starting yesterday, May 1st, you can go to your restoration saga or DIY threads et.al. and update your links to some other picture hosting site of your own choosing. After that, any pictures that you used Dropbox for will become unviewable and you won't be able to change them. This is a one time shot to fix it.

I am pleased you decided to do this. Otherwise many of my links would have stayed dead.

I fixed the ones that I could find in EGV107. It takes some time to locate the originals and then link them in a different way. I will do some more checking, but if they don't all get done by end of this week, so be it. World will not end .

If anyone knows of any dead links of mine, please pm me. Thanks

I'm also thankful for the elaboration on the "alert", Dig.

If you want to take a short cut, create a thread down in the test forum. Use the "Manage Attachments" to upload your Dropbox pictures and they will be hosted on BenzWorld. You can then link them from your thread and they will always be available as long as BenzWorld exists. I've been doing that a lot lately. I tested it by uploading from my photobucket account and then deleting the photobucket picture. The uploaded picture is still in my test thread.

I'm also thankful for the elaboration on the "alert", Dig.
I've been undecided as to whether to do the same in the other chassis forums where I am not a designated mod. Don't want to step on any toes.

Unfortunately that's not really a SHORT cut. It takes several extra steps. Once I find a dead link, I then have to find the picture on Dropbox. Once I find the correct picture, it is easy enough to copy and paste the link. Then change the end of the link from =0 to =1 so it will display picture instead of just showing link.

I must have done several dozen yesterday - I think I got all the egv107 ones fixed. I now do a search using my username and dropbox. That brings up posts with bad links. But it is a tedious job and I have other things on the go.

It would be better to upload everything to BW so it is not lost again, but sorry, I am taking the easiest route for me.

That's interesting. I didn't realize that the Dropbox links were already broken. I thought you were just looking for a new place to hold your old pics. Carry on.

This is what I predict for "the cloud." Notice how various vendors including Microsoft are encouraging you to keep your stuff in the free quasi-public space called the cloud, giving up local ownership. It will only be a matter of time when the cloud is no longer free and you will have to pay to get your own stuff back.

I don't wear a tin foil hat....but some things I do believe will come to fruition.

Like all the "free" cloud space. Nothing is free. EVER.

And like a true drug addict...once you're hooked....you will pay the man.

I have a Photo Bucket account but never used it to post pics. here. Don't remember the password anyway. Guess I was right to post pics directly.

Everything is still on your own computer as well as backed up on the cloud. The advantage is that you can access the cloud from any computer or web linked device.

The way you will really lose all your stuff, is if it is only on your hard drive and then that craps out.

Definitely best to upload your pics here directly, but it is not so handy if you want to insert them within text. For that, Dig suggests uploading them to the Test forum. Then link from there to where you want them within text. He guarantees that the Test Forum will accept all pics and never disappear ;)

I'm told that as long as BenzWorld is here, your uploaded pics will be here as well. If BenzWorld ever goes away, you'll have to hunt me down to sue me.
:devil

Meanwhile, I have an icon on my phone that takes me directly to my test thread so that I can upload pictures to it without having to go through a lot of menu options.

This test thread post hosts the first photo for this thread "Rear Door Glass / Quarter Glass Removal".

I did use photobucket to host the 20 or so photos of the glass removal in the middle of the thread but I don't recall why. I should have just sent them here.

After 5 or 6 hours, the links have all been converted - as far back as a search would go anyway. That's it! Just hope Dropbox doesn't screw us again.

Thanks to Dig & BW for allowing editing. The bad Dropbox links over at Peachparts can't be fixed at this time.
