Driveshaft shift during neutral

I have a 1987 560 sl and when I put the car in neutral while its running, it will make a banging noise. so I blocked the wheels and put it in neutral and looked under the car and saw the driveshaft rotating slightly one way then the other way making a clunking noise. It does not make any noise in drive or reverse or park, with or without the brakes applied. Anyone have any ideas - flex discs, center bearing, transmount? I'ld sure appreciate some ideas.

If the driveshaft rotates while the rear wheels are stationary that would seem to indicate excessive wear in the differential, i.e. the ring and pinion gears. Excessive backlash would also account for the clunk you are hearing. Not very common, these are usually pretty stout. Do you know the vehicle's maintenance history? And how many miles? Dave.

the body has 248,000 miles on it and the engine has 81,000. No I don't have a history bought it March 2006.
You've got some mileage on that baby. You might check to see how much driveline play you have. With the wheels blocked, engine off and trans in neutral, try rotating the driveshaft back and forth by hand. It shouldn't move much, if it does, see if you can simulate the clunk. If you can manually cause and locate the clunk all the better. If the car wasn't serviced regularly 248k is a lot of miles on a drivetrain.
