Hi all,

It just occurred to me that I'd never asked about this.
Sometimes I downshift to 3 and 2 on my auto for some additional stopping power when I need it. Sometimes I do it just for kicks. Is that bad? Can the habit really hurt my tranny?

TIA,
Shady

I personally don't "downshift" with the Auto tranny. On the other hand, I definately like to leave it in 3rd gear alot.
If anyone knows of any issues, please post it...

It has to be bad for the tranny. I have a friend that drives like that down shifts on an auto. Replaced the tranny 2x. My bro does to he eventually had to replace his tranny.

What about just when having to stop down a steep hill?

Downshifting using the engine to slow down does just that...increases the wear and tear on the parts used to slow the vehicle down. A simple way to look at it.....brakes are much cheaper to replace than a trany and/or an engine.
