After pressing the "Lock" button on the Electronic SmartKey or pressing the "Lock" button on the center console, the "knob" on the top of the door panel does not move down; and hence, the door remains unlocked. Upon pulling the external door handle, an alarm is annunciated. What causes these conditions?

the locks on your car are powered by a vacuum pump. your pump is failing or has failed. your car still activates the alarm because it works fine but the car thinks the door is locked/should be locked

Your answer leads me to ask the following questions: (1) Where is the location of this vacuum pump; and (2) What is the identity of the associated fuse? Thank you.

Try searching on google for "fuse chart mercedes w215" I think that will give you a link to the fuse charts.

The rear headrests and soft close on the doors is also running on vacuum do these work?

The pump on a W215 is in the trunk above the left wheel well. Not sure what model the OP has since he did not post a year for the car.

I am guessing that the rear headrests do not move either.

Sounds a lot like a broken vacuum pump, but if you are a DIY guy, then you should buy a STAR or a Carsoft system so you can read the codes, just getting a fault code readout could cost the same as a cheap diagnostics system, and then you will be able to find the errors yourself in the future.

If you are not a DIY guy, go to your local Mercedes repair shop and have them print the codes, then come back here and post them.

Maybe we can then help you find a used/new part that you can install yourself.

Hello. I am new to the forum so my apologies for jumping on to this thread. However, I am experiencing the same problem(s). Neither door will lock or unlock using the key fob, the rear head rests do not move, the door lock button on the middle console does not work, gas tank cover is locked (I can't even put gas in the darn thing), and my trunk is locked and will not respond to key fob, the trunk release button on the driver's side door, nor the key blade. Would this "pump under the seat" be the cause of these numerous problems? If so, how much will this fix cost me? Thanks in advance.

One thing I can tell you is that - YOUR KEY WILL OPEN YOUR TRUNK!
I have posted this quite a few times as the same happened to me (dead battery).
You need to try your key in all different postions while pushing in the trunk button at the same time. I think mine worked on about a quarter of a turn.
You have to 'jiggle' it about a bit. It may take a minute or two before you will get it open - but it should open.
It will not open by turning it a full or half turn like normal trunks. I don't know why MB did this, perhaps another security feature.
As for the rest - I will leave it to the experts to suggest solutions.

Thank you for the response. I tried again this morning to no avail. Oh, I forgot to mention that I stopped by the dealership on the way home from work yesterday, and even the service writer couldn't get it to open with the blade?!?!?!? This is driving me nuts. Unfortunately, I had to break my fuel lid this morning because my car was nearly on empty. Add that fix to the ever growing list of items that will be depleting my pockets...

The trunk (or boot as we call it in New Zealand) WILL open with the key - it is a question of having it in the right place. You have to push the trunk button continuously whilst 'jiggling' the key around in all sorts of positions. From memory mine opened at around the quarter turn mark.

Its really nasty to open when its been opened and closed with the battery dead.
It takes practice. Make sure the key is ALL the way inserted. Turn counterclockwise all the way. Now push the release while keeping the key turned. And add a whole buch of jiggle to the top of the trunk if like me you decided to try and close it again after the battery is dead. I would suggest AVOIDING doing this as its a true pain in the AZZ to open again.
