My driver door makes a scraping sound in the last few inches before it closes. There is also a pop-bang sound to get past the inner rest position. I have applied white lithium grease to the hinges and strap that slides inside the door. I even shot graphite into a hole where the strap slides in.

But I don't think I'm making a difference. I've scanned a lot of discussions threads on doors, locks, and hinges, but do not see the same issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks, db

Hi.

Do you think the check strap needs to be replaced? Usually helps when my door makes them noises and lubing doesn't help.

Hi Joshua,

Probably so, but I just can't visualize which interior fastener fails. The steel strap itself seems so functional.

Actually -- it probably bears stating that where the strap fastens to the car body has some looseness to it unlike the passenger side. But the scrape and bump seems to come from inside the door panel.

I'm allergic to taking off the door panel, which I guess is the operation that awaits me. The raspy sounds sure are a bummer!

not a bad job. i replaced mine. no amount of lube will likely fix it. do a search on how to remove the appropiate panel and take your time. once in there its a no brainer.

I have half of your problem- the popping sound. On the car body itself, the weld that holds the check strap assembly has broken through. You can visibly see the broken weld in the door frame. A shop said they could weld it back for a mere $85. I wish I knew a farmer here in Lee's Summit, Missouri, that would do it for a story or two- or a 6 pack of beer.

I've replaced about 10 of these in the last couple years. Piece of cake, no need to be scared. A few screws, some trim plastic thingys, and three bolts, you're golden. Chances are you'll find a steel ball or two in the bottom of the door from where they've fallen out of the track in the door check itself.

You might want to get some paint from Paintscratch.com before you install it. Keep it all looking the way it should.
