I was just curious if MB still make complete motors for our W140 cars? Just thinking down the road when my motor ever gives out, I would like to buy a new 5 liter motor (upgrade from my 4.2 liter) and stick it in.

There are probably no complete new engines available, but MB would have reman units you could transfer your parts from. Your quest will be a very expensive undertaking considering all the components, and the changes made to the engines, like the ignition system and computer parts.

why not find a 5.0 in the junkyard of a compatible year model? And make a full restore/overhaul/blueprint of that one before you put it in? I'm sure there has been a lot of upgrades from the 400 to the 500

used motors

in germany, ebay is full of used engines which are in good condition. They do part out a lot of good cars these days because the parts are worth more than the car. An engine costs around 1000 euros. maybe more with warranty from a repair shop / overhaul. I am quite sure mercedes can deliver a new engine, but the price would be prohibitive, given the availability of used ones.

Talk to mercedes mechanic. I needed an engine, he told me he has a still in crate, 0 miles M119 5.0. said he would give it up for $4,000 (Might have been 5 i dont remember)
Considering some 100K engines are going for 2700 thats a beautiful price.

I went a different direction, but man'O'man, could you imaging having a fresh factory M119.... sigh.. I'll dream about it but thats all..

That is probably a stripped down block, the accessories are probably extrs, harness computer modules etc.

If you are planning to do any upgrades to the car, give Renntech a call. Not sure if they still do anything for the W140 chassis, but the certainly know their way around Mercedes cars, plus the have a reputation for quality parts.

the m119 and the 722.6 tranny together for $65,000 refurb at the dealer i just asked. they said $75,000 for the m120 with 722.6 tranny. You can actually bore out your engine and do a full rebuild for about $5,000-10,000 if i remember the quote properly

I was just thinking again...maybe, when it comes time to do an engine rebuild...I might as well replace all ECU and engine to a more modern engine? They will eventually be these in wreckers with complete ECU and engine intack...so it wouldn't be that super expensive...just need some super techno know-how...maybe a project thread :)
