Hi,
I have 2 new 225/55/16 tires that I'd like to save for mid-summer when my last-season ones give up. The original tires should be 215/55/16 - which I am running now without problems.

Will 225/55/16 fit? I'm worrried both about fenders and about the shock absorber - there is like 1-2mm space between the tire and the wheel as-is (my tires are XL so they have slightly larger sides)

Theoretically they should fit. I have 205/65-15s on my car and the size you mention is not much bigger than that. It's wider but the radius is pretty much the same.

I have also seen several cars in the Los Angeles area hat have swapped wheels directly from the W211, which has 225/55-16 tires as standard.

They'll fit, but you'll be rubbing.

I have 225/50/16, but the spare is 225/55/16 on my 300CE Sportline (not a whole lot different that a 400E). I have no rubbing with the 225/50, but the 225/55 rubs badly when I turn or go into dips.

I ran 215 x 50 x 17 on my Sportline this winter. Fenders are rolled, but with 17x7.5 et35, no rubbing.
