Hi all, read though and tried to search the forum and google the best I could for a DIY pictorial window regulator replacement for the front windows with the airbags on w210 1997 E420. My mom's car just had the regulator go and I'm going to try and replace it myself to save her a few bucks.

Found out where to get all the parts ect, but does anyone know of a posting with a DIY pictorial of the front windows? Her front drivers window is the one that stopped working. There seems to be a bunch for the rear and it doesn't look too hard.

I've never seen one. How do you know it's for sure the regulator? The front ones seem to be pretty bulletproof.

That said, you can sign up with alldata to get the instructions to change the front one, but I'd suggest just getting started. Read through the rear one a bit in detail so you know where to look for hidden screws, etc. Once you get the panel off you'll see how the regulator is held in.

Take pics on your way and do a DIY, gain netimmortality in the stickies.

My friends 1997 e420 front ones were out best way to tell is open it up and see. Makes sense the fronts would go out quicker since they're used the most. Its the same process as the rear but easier. Basically take off panel there a video how to on the DIY stickies then drill the rivets out unscrew the window from the metal compress and slip the broken regulator out then put in the new regulator just make sure you align the new rivets where they're supposed to go. NOTE: be careful with the window and the panel the plastic fasteners seem to break easily so pry gently on the sides and have some super glue handy incase.

Anyone willing to upload the diagram for the front on here for this guy? It will make this job alot easier.

Also we knew it was a bad regulator on my friends e420 because the window was slanted and we could move the window around with our hands

Thanks for all the replys. My main concern is not with taking the window reg out, but more with the airbag (extra connections, etc). Has anyone taken apart the front door with an airbag and can lend any pointers or is it the same as the rear doors? Shop said it was the window regulator and gave my mom a pretty high quote to fix it so figured I'd give it a shot first.

The e420 had side air bags too just disconnect the clip. But I didn't worry about them at all with the battery connected or disconnected the process was the same. just watch the video.

If anyone has a diagram of the front door and the parts and where they go that would be a HUGE help. Working on it now, but very stuck....

Sorry to bump an old thread. Also looking for a front window DIY. Will continue searching but wanted to add to the thread there that in my searching I've seen a number of people post about the FRONT regulator coming apart where a bunch of the different arms join and rotate. This is indeed where mine is broken as well -- and I have the crooked window symptom mentioned by Spadwaller so maybe that is the telltale sign of that prob? I was hoping that it was the cheap little clip problem so I could just order another one for $2. What is the symptom for the $2 clip breaking? Does that break on both front and back?

The think I need better instructions on and was hoping to find photos is how the window detaches from the regulator. I see there is a clip on the far right side of the bottom of the window with a star bolt in it. Is that clip supposed to slide in the rail, because mine is stuck to the far right. Wondering if that is what caused the failure. I can't see how the three arms can line up in there very well without that side sliding (don't have the new regulator yet as I'm just opening up to check for the issue).

My screw is stuck in there so I was *hoping* to get better instructions online here while I came back into the house to find something to loosen the screw.

What else is the process for disconnecting the window from the mechanism? Can someone try to describe it in a little more detail so I don't just go in there forcing things?

Also posting a photo of the front window regulator for anyone reading this post in the future. The part that I think may be the weak point is the joint where the three arms connect in the center, on the left side of the photo.

I have the same problem with my 1996 E300D (W210)...the front drivers side regulator broke. I have purchased the new one, drilled out the rivets from the old & removed it. Now I am in the process of installing the new one. It appears as though the front and rear regulators are quite different unfortunately. It would be quite helpful to view a diagram, pictorial, video, or any other info on how to correctly install it. Has anyone found any useful info on this?
