DIY - 1993 190E 2.3 Automatic Transmission removal / replace? Is it worth it?

The reverse on my '93 190e 2.3 Automatic (180k miles) has stopped / barely working. I now have the joy of only finding parking spots in which I can drive forward out, or at least stick the foot out the door and push myself backwards to get out. :dance:

From what i've read on the net, it seems that this is is an obvious sign that the transmission is going out- and i've also read that it's better to just get a rebuilt tranny instead of repairing my problem.

Since I live in Southern California, it makes sense to get one from these guys (www.mercedesdismantlers.com) for $1500.

I am not a mechanic by any means, (i.e.: I can change my own alternator- but wouldn't do my own head gasket repair). but I do have all the regular tools + warm garage and from what I've heard Automatic transmissions aren't too scary to do on your own.

Does anyone have any guides / tips on how to do this procedure? I don't even know where to begin...

I should also note that I'm a bit on the fence for dropping $1500 for a transmission. Especially searching Craiglist you see people selling 190e's for $2,000 in pretty good shape. However I think it could be a good decision since i've already done the following:

-head gasket / valve job
-front strut mounts
-new alternator
-engine mounts
-all new shocks

Assuming the transmission replace would be the last "big" thing to replace and make the car good for many years to come..

Opinions?

have u checked or flushed the trans fluid yet?

You need a basic set of home mechanic's tools and possibly an engine hoist. I've found it's difficult to remove the transmission by itself, and just pull the whole drivetrain now.

trans swaps are easy to do, only basic tools required and new filter and seal needed..grab a good spare from a local parts car...schedule a meet and get it done...theres more then a few members in CA someone has to be close...also go check on 190rev..alot of CA guys on there as well

It's not a hard job, I mean if you did the rest of the work to it, I'm sure you can handle this. I have found tho, that it is easier by far to remove engine and tranny as a complete unit and replace the trans then to do it in the car. It's a bit cramped in the tunnel, I've done them on the lift and they do come out but it's not easy on the ground. These cars are remarkably straightforward in the way they come apart, even the hood hinges way back so you do not have to remove it.

ive done both out the top and the bottom and the bottom is far easier. less wires to unhook ans you dont need to get it in at an extreme angle. also the engine wiring harness on the older mbs can get brittle from the temp changes in the engine bay. and any movement can crack the wiring cause shorts and have you chasing idle and drivabilty issues. this is from experience so be aware

Was this on a 2.3? I found it to be impossible to get it out without the engine on my 2.6 because there was minimal clearance between the bolts holding the trans to the engine and the firewall. A 2.3 may have more room, or I would suspect this much.

Do you have any tips for doing it on a 2.6? I really had a hell of a time, the bolts were damn near inaccessible for me.

If you're working on the floor, don't even dream of tackling it alone, it's a two man job, one full day.

MB trans are heavy as crap and really tight fit, could do real damage if it came down on you. You'll need a trans jack and very long socket extensions to get to top bell-housing bolts.

^^ that. i used alot of extensions and a swivel joint and beer.

Can anyone be more specific on the bolts in the top of the bell housing? I have swivel joints and tried a variety of extensions but the top two on each side - I have no idea how in the hell to get them out - this on a w202 but its probably the same principle.

go ask/search the W202 and get the correct information for your car, on the w201 i use a plain old gear wrench and maybe a extension just to break the torque
