This should be really obvious, but in case I'm missing some nuance I thought it best to ask. Using STAR to disable the system, it is ok then to turn off the ignition & disconnect STAR while doing repairs isn't it? Then reconnecting and re-enabling after the work is finished, right? My plan is to get the disks & pads off before Tuesday morning to confirm that I don't need any additional parts before my order is processed so that I won't run into any rude surprises while I'm in the middle of it all. It'll stay on the stands until the parts arrive.

Why complicate the life?
Pushing tow button, locking the car and securing the keys from accidental push always worked for me.
Still good practice is not to put you fingers anywhere where they can get cut. That is what tools are for.

If you disabled SBC with STAR you don't disconnect the unit. Switch the engine off, you can leave STAR hooked to the car and do your work. Or just disconnect the SBC unit without using STAR (it may throw alarms). Or as Krzysztof said lock the car and move the keys away, it's faster.

I had wondered if unplugging might not necessitate going through all over that longish procedure I had to endure when I replaced the control unit. No matter though; with SDS it's a simple and not very time consuming to disable the thing. It's resting quietly while I wait for parts. I suppose shortcuts are tempting if you're on the clock but that doesn't trouble me.

SBC had recall for faulty plugs.
Maybe I was wrong, but that made me never touching it.
Still pulling the plug create errors that need SD to clear, doesn't it?

I've never had a problem. I unplug mine before working on the brakes, and I plug it back in when I'm done. To be fair though, I have never opened the door, nor turned the vehicle on whilst the SBC unit was unplugged as doing so may just throw some errors. I do find it to be the easiest and most positive method to avoid unexpected activation.

I remember opening a door that made an alarm go off but I was finished with the work so I plugged it back in and everything was fine. MB actually has an official procedure for disabling the SBC without STAR for remote places in the world that may not have STAR. I have done it the first time before I had the STAR, you lock the car take the keys away, wait for 10-30 minutes, then you do a dance around the car turning wheels in opposite corners to activate it back.

I guess I will never get it why some owners will cut the corners and go around simple instruction.
I guess some people are simply keyboard happy and have hard time to imagine that you still can fix lot of things on cars without computer.

I believe my iCarsoft MBII diagnostic unit can also disable SBC for brake pad changes. Haven't tried it yet but if I do I'll let you know if it worked.
