I painted a set that looks great from 7 feet away. Use tape and be careful and slow.

Hmmm from how far away?

There is a special tool that covers up the shiny parts. It is no longer available at the dealer - so if you can find one it will be second hand and it will cost a fortune. I doubt if it would help with a refurbishment process - 90% of the work is in the preparation...

painting hubcaps

This sounds like an incredibly tedious job. I'll see if I can bribe my grandson. :D

Hi!

They'r readily available in germany, but not cheap: cb's Autoteile - Oldtimer Ersatz- und Austauschartikel :: Lackiersterne

Well that's not the factory special tool - sniff sniff!

(Thanks for the link I didn't realise some bright spark had decided to make a modern day replacement. Not a bad deal if you compare this price with the cost of the original special tool which must have been hewn from some out of this world metal by bare breasted beauties for the kind of money they wanted...)

The trick is to use the lowest profile tape. That blue crap at Home Depot won't cut it. Go to an automotive paint supplier.

hub caps

200T: the german website with "wheel cover painting devices" does not list the W123 sedan. Am I reading the site wrong?

hubcaps

Thanks, Josh. I just plain missed that listing. I figure the part will cost about $110 US, perhaps extra for shipping. That's a bit pricey, but then again, I'm never going to find nice ones for sale (stress "nice" ones). Maybe I'll go into the hubcap/wheel cover painting business on the side after I get my Anthracite Gray caps done. :D

Not a bad idea. I will most likely end up getting one of those since I am going to do it right when I paint mine.
