I want to buy a W124 series diesel wagon for occasional kid hauling but primarily for a 160 mile primarily interstate daily commute?

What years were diesel wagons sold in the US excluding Gray Market cars?

What years came with Trap Oxidizers?

Should I avoid cars with Trap Oxidizers/

I know the 300TD was available in '87, and did have a trap oxidizer then. However, the oxidizer was a recall item (removed) and I hear the dealers will still honor the recall, so it should not be an issue. The real issue with that year was the cylinder head, but the fix was an updated design that you can tell by the head number.

I have an '87 300TD with almost 300K on it. It has been great for hauling the kids around! I highly recommend one.

If you aren't stuck on the wagon, I have a gorgeous/near perfect 92 E300D 2.5T sedan that i'm thinking of selling.

Anywho, just a thought!

1987 is the last and only year the 124 came to the US with a diesel. I enjoy mine, just wished I could get more than 25 miles per gallon.

Really? Then this W124 E300D 2.5T sitting in my garage must be an anomaly. They brought b/w 5 and 6000 2.5T 124's b/w 92 and 95.

My '87 300TD gets between 27 and 33 mpg--yours should too.

124 diesels were imported to the US in '87 w/OM603 (3.0L 6 cyl. turbo), and '90-93'w/OM602 (2.5L 5 cyl. turbo), and finally in '95 w/OM606 (3.0L 6 cyl. NA)

Jonathan,
I am not stuck on a wagon and might end up with a sedan, just depends on whether I can find a really clean wagon with a good service record. I will keep you in mind. Are you in Atlanta?

Thanks everyone for all the info. If anyone has any leads on a really clean well maintained wagon I would appreciate it if you would let me know. My email is: [email protected]

Where can I find info on the cylinder head change and the trap oxidizer recall?

What would be a reasonable price for an '87 300TD wagon with over 300K km (about 200K miles). The original engine was replaced with I' so the last 110K km (75K miles) are on that engine.

I've read some things about the '91 350 SD engine. Any comments/concerns?

The 350 engine was pretty much a crapshoot. Some people had good luck with them, getting wonderful power and reliability. Others sufered catastrophic failures including bent connecting rods and out of round cylinder wear. I know there was some sort of update for this (without a recall I believe), but I do not know the details except that new conrods were a factor.

All said, I would avoid that engine.
