read your 129 forum and just need an overview of what im getting into and if it is worth it--usually in the w126 forum and own a w203

Car is a:
1994 320sl 66,000 miles all records green/tan w v12 badging for $16,500
cosmetically great looks garaged both tops included and in good condition

this will be a mom mobile so not really concerned about speed, so is it worth this price, also what is average round town/highway mpg--

thanks, i know i can count on all of you to help

1994 SL320 and V12 badging

HK,

Something doesn't seem right about the car you are looking at.

The SL320 is a V6 so V12 badging is not correct (I am assuming that the v12 badging you mentioned is referring to engine size). People can buy most anything for their cars these days... this includes badging. Because there is a lot of "keeping up with the Jones'es" these days, some people will replace the SL500 and SL320 badging for SL600 badging to give the appearance that they own something more than they have.

If the car had been rear-ended and repainted, some shop could have put the wrong numbers on the back... like SL320. They did make the SL600 in 94 but I don't recall seeing pictures of a SL600 with a v12 badge anywhere on it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist though. There's a thread called R129 Photos that shows pics of a lot of our cars... you could look in that thread for pictures of correct badging.

When all else fails... look under the hood and be sure to buy a carfax report that you run yourself. I did that on the 1996 that I bought and had peace of mind through looking at the records.

As far as fuel economy, etceteras, go here:

Find a Car

Hope this helps.

Russell, I think he may know it's a 320, not a 600, just that somebody has put V12 stickers on it.

$16,500 is big number for a 94 SL320. Something closer to $15K would be a decent price for a 94 with that mileage.

thanks for the info--- like keeping benzes as much stock as possible and have been around these cars for years and even worked on a couple non w126 at the shop, but you are all the experts on these body specific cars...the driveline, i know
some guy wanted to have a look alike so he updated the badging, and cladding, i assumed that when I saw that price

I have a SL600 (the real thing) and a SL320. They are both 95's. I've had the SL320 longer at almost five years and have never had a problem. Very strong runner and a great car. Of course make sure the wiring harness has been updated and you should be ok. $15000 sounds about right for a good one.

IRLCK, You're probably right. I figure most anybody on this forum know's what they're looking at (when it comes to Mercedes Benz) but I've made mistakes about making assumptions before.

Since questions are asked in this forum, and since what might be obvious to one person might escape another, I answered the way I did.

I did point him (and others) to a good web site in regard to fuel economy.

Just eager to help my friend.
