I know that some folks have used led blinkers and some forum members are using hfmscan and some other variants as well. Now that I have a E320 and an E420, I was looking into Snap-on tool. The body seems to be selling for $50 and the cartridge for about $125. Seems like a decent setup for less than $200 and will work for both HFM and LH unless I am missing something.

Any experience or feedback on these tools?
Any other alternatives?

Thx

Yes, I am using Carsoft V.12. Overall, pretty happy with it. Easy computer install, no hacking, etc. Very good technical support. No queueing and being stuck on hold somewhere in India. I really like that I can version 7.4 and version 12 simultaneously.

Covers a wide area of vehicles, not just the engine. Carsoft can diagnose ABS, climate control, etc as well depending on vehicle. I used it on the W211 as well. In fact, need to use it again on this car for some telematics troubleshooting since the Comand has gone into complete disobedience when it tries to communicate with the phone module. You can make or take a call, but audio is no longer being passed.

In my experience, the after sale support for these devices is very important which is lacking in the Chinese knockoff junk.

The only weak spot I found is that it cannot diagnose the engine modules on the very early CAN bus that uses analog pulses such as on my W140s with the V12.

For scanning the engine codes, I use a 38 pin breakout box and a normal pulse counter like used for checking codes on a W124.

I am still on the lookout for the original MB SDS with integrated LCD screen as used by MB dealers when the cars were new. So far, it has eluded me. But I am not the type that just gives up. I will find one somewhere, sometime, somehow.

Ha, they don't seem too tech savvy...their web site now points to a NSFW site unless you add sales behind their name. Yet, the url to purchase does not work.

Anyways, looks like a good alternative to MT2500. Is it good for LH based engines like M119? I need one tool that works for both my E320 and E420.
Thx

Yeah, that should not pose a problem. As you long as you don't need full coverage beyond say 2005, the genuine Carsoft is a pretty good solution. I went with them because of 2 things. Decent reputation, and they are located in Belgium not too far where I am. So if I should run into a snag it's just a short ride down the road.

Be aware though, that you cannot do any programming through Carsoft like programming keys, version coding, etc..

You need the genuine MB supplied stuff for that, but that doesn't apply to these old cars.

Also be aware that there are knockoff Carsoft setups being paddled through Amazon and the like. Stay away from them as they usually supply the old 7.4 version. I ordered mine directly from Carsoft.

As for a laptop, almost anything Win XP and newer with a serial port will run it without a hitch. I am using Windows 10 Professional, that originally came with Windows 7. Got the free upgrade and everything continued to run without a hitch.

Don't know why your search is redirecting to some NSFW URL, but this is the one that I use and it still works as it always has.

Carsoft Ultimate Home MB & Sprinter

You'll want the 195 Euro version as it comes with the MUX and the necessary cabling you need.

TOP tip: IIRC the laptop must have a "real" a.k.a. built-in 9 pin serial port in order to interface with the MUX. I remember them saying that USB to serial adapters are not compatible.

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/diagnostics/Snap-On/Mercedes_Live_Data.pdf shows few interesting data points that live feed gives.
Looking at the coverage pdf, the main difference from Snap-on setup seems to be lack of live data with Carsoft.
I sent couple of emails to Carsoft over the last few days but no response so far.

Anyone with Snap-on setup wants to chime in with their experience?

You may need to drive up to their office and see what the real story is.
According to this, they packed up shop but the link above works.
