I have tried several mono valves for my heater in a 1986 W126. None seem to last or won't work at all. I have resorted to removing the bottom of the solenoid plunger to use in the winter but that only results in heat all the time. Where can I get a reliable replacement valve.

There's been about 5 million words written on monovalves. I suggest you use the search function and read up on it. There is no simple answer, unless you want to spend a lot of money.
