I have a 2007 R63 with a dead battery. The keyless go will not work. I tried to use the metal key in the remote. It turns; but, it does not unlock the vehicle. I believe I left the lights on. I am assuming the aux battery is dead also.

Any idea on how to open the vehicle or the hood. I would prefer not to do any damage if possible.

Success!!! The key probably has not been used in years. I turned the key and gave the handle a few quick tugs and it opened.

Looks like I will be replacing the aux battery and testing the main battery.

We have a 2006 R500 with the original battery. I've never seen a battery go 7 yrs before and its getting on winter and yo uknow how it is with batteries and Winter/Summer weather changes. I understand this is also not a lead/acid battery so maybe this is ok.

What level of expectation should one have for the life of this battery. At $300+ for the battery itself I'd like to be reaonable about it's replacement. The vehicle cranks very strong; granted it only takes a few rotations to start it.

I replaced mine, it was the original. I see batteries as a consumable. 7 years, they have given you all you could ask for.

The battery is under the front passenger seat. You do not need to remove the seat. I just unbolted the front bolts, pulled up the carpet. Then moved the seat all the way forward and removed the read bolts. From there, just remove the cover and remove the battery. While you have everything out, change the auxiliary battery. (I did not and paid the price.) The auxiliary battery is in front of the passenger seat.

I rarely drive my wifes car. I don't find it comfortable but she loves it. Regardless, a wife stuck somewhere because of a dead battery is never a good idea. Maybe I should bite the bullet. I do see lots of options for the main battery so I will be researching that.

The mechanical key in my W251 does the same thing. You insert the key, turn it and then have to pull the handle a couple times.

On my W211, the key actually turns the lock, so the door opens easily.

I know we were talking about a dead car battery, but my understanding is that if the battery is dead in the key fob, you'll still be able to open and start the car.
