So it looks like the dealer installed a Genuine but REMANUFACTURED radio Parts SKU: 164-900-73-01-80 aka 164 900 73 01 80 aka 164.900.73.02.80

It started going crazy a year after install and they pretty much said if you want us to check it pay a re-diagnostic fee of 300$ to which I said I have a recording of it turning off between 40 and 50 minutes of operation and simply want a working radio installed... it was never resolved. and we simply got used to the radio turning off after 45 minutes of driving... after about 2 years it would get stuck on the Mercedes logo booting up.... then 3 years after replacement it stopped booting and or even turning on. I basically got used to the peaceful silence.... if i pressed and held the power button for like 10 seconds i could hear the CDs still inside start shuffling so i knew it was getting power....

one day my battery went dead and then the clock on the dashboard was wrong... THAT I COULD NOT TOLERATE, so i pulled the radio out and noticed that even though the car had not been driven for days the bottom of the unit (where the hard drive was) was noticeably warm. all i know if i used to have to keep my car on a battery tender if I did not drive it for a few weeks, but without this display unit in the car the battery is always charged... looks like my display unit was parasitically draining my battery as well...

anyways back to my clock... looks like i could only adjust it through my command so I have to repair this piece of junk (I was going to say German overcomplicated garbage, but the display is actually manufactured in Japan). has anyone torn down the display past this point? I cannot find any documentation of information. but have a feeling something will become obvious... I do see excessive dust on the cooling fan blowing towards the ignition switch.... Did I also mention my GL refused to start in the past when it was cold, I replaced the $14 starter relay the same day I pulled the radio out so im not sure if one or both are the reason, but I do know it starts without issue now....

Hello. I highly recommend that you make this your weekend project and install a new android radio/system in your car. You can eBay a Chinese version or pay top dollar from an aftermarket shop. There are couple of threads on aftermarket radio setup on here. See the search function. Google also has a few things. GL.
Thank you for the suggestion.... I contemplated that, but then my headrest screens for the middle row won't work correctly if I am not mistaken... researched and looked at the eBay ones which look soooo cheap...I looked at the AVIN unit and it looks like all the separate dongles and modules still result in a 1000$ chinesium radio. not sure what you mean by aftermarket shop... somewhat troubling to think I would omit the amplifier and all the modules with a single din aftermarket deck. all those dashboard informational messages would probably no longer work... I hope somehow popping in the hard drive I ordered from eBay for like $40 will permit the radio to boot... have a feeling without the sectors being partioned correctly I will not have GPS data unless someone shares their disks. curious: once you transfer the disc info can you simply resell the discs on eBay and permit someone else to write the info to their car after getting the information transferred to the hard drive? I have been on the forums for weeks and all the info in my head has become garbled... at this point I want to see if I can do it.. If anyone has an aftermarket solution in the chicagoland area and would not mind me checking it out, I would appreciate it.... I also drive up to Cazenovia Wisconsin so if someone is near Milwaukee Madison Wisconsin dells or baraboo I would love to detour and see your install.

Have you checked the auxiliary battery? a small 12v battery on the side of the normal battery, several have experienced strange errors if it is bad.
Yes I have , thank you, I even replaced it with my last replacement of the main battery going into this winter... the Radio / display did not come back...

I just came across this while sorting old photos. in august of 2019 I received an error on my screen that said " Navigation map on the hard disc is not suitable for the system" and yet a few days later, it disappeared and worked as it had before... just received my eBay ordered exact same hard drive and am wondering if I should just try to clone the hard drive using Norton and if the hard drive is any good anymore. I have to say my blood boils every time I drive by a Mercedes dealership... Mercedes Benz of Chicago replaced my unit with a remanufactured one and really could have cared less when I begged them years ago to help fix what I already paid for.... the one in Scottsdale Arizona tried to tell me my mom needed new brakes on her GLK a few weeks after I had just replaced them (they didn't expect someone in Scottsdale to work on their own cars I suppose and saw nothing in the vin history that would suggest they not create nonsense work)...

that looks like a nice unit... from what I am beginning to understand, Alpine actually made the OEM display W164 and the 6 disc cd / dvd changer mechanism is their part number... unfortunately that unit you have has been discontinued and I do not believe an alternative is available other than the Chinese Alvin junk.
