Nice car, I like he rims and the paint. I would suggest getting euros for it to make it look complete.

BTW, is that a new paint job???

Thanks, I think the rims look great with that color. I fully indent on getting euros. I found them for 249 from katmac..the paint job is the original from 82...

Wow! That car looks like brand new!

Can you tell me what kind of fuel economy you get? I am looking for a car to get me to and from the train station because my Passat keeps on getting broken into (it is targeted for my stereo system which was stolen twice already :(

Thanks!

hey,

as for MPG. I get about 20-25mpg. Others will get higher like 28-30. My engine needs some work done till i can get it up that high. I would recommend the SD model over the SDL. the SDL has a history of problem with bending rods. The 617 engine in the SD is built extremely well. If you drive lightly and not with a lead foot, u should get like 25-30 MPG.

If you look on ebay, you can get used Bosch units for $100. Infact, recently a set of Euro-take offs Bosch sold for $105. The Bosch units are better built than the Taiwanese TYC and Depo units.

The "rod bending" problem dealt with the 350 diesel engine found in the 350SD and 350SDL (1990-1991 w126, and early w140).

The only problem with the 300SDL was that the early ones would crack their heads when overheated. Solution... DO NOT OVERHEAT YOUR ENGINE. That should be a given anyways.

Thanks for the info :)

I am actually a little bit surprised that the diesel doesn't get even better fuel economy than that . . .

I love the big-body Benzes though . . . I convinced my Dad that he "needed" a W140 about 2 years ago and he has absolutely loved it [:)] It has cost us next to nothing to run too. It is a really great car.

I am looking for something just to zip back and forth from the train station with. The W126 might be a little too big for that purpose, so I should maybe look for something a little smaller. I woudl really like a Mercedes diesel for their reliability and longevity. There is a HIGH-mileage (470,000kms) 1985 190D for sale for $1,000 that might be a good deal. Half a million kms might be too high though . . .

Bryan

I love to see the first gen cars in such good
shape – preserve the history.
Agreed. All you need is that center cap for the one wheel. They are extremely reasonable and available from any dealer or any of the online parts houses. Give Jonathan a buzz at [email protected] - he'll hook you up.

How far away is the station? If it is not too far, diesel may not be all that economical especially in Canadian winter. During the winter months, you may end up warming up the engine more than the commute itself. Have you considered a W124 (300E perhaps)?
